AN EXPLORATION OF ART HISTORY

Word of the Day: Pietà

German_Pieta

A pietà is a painted or sculpted representation of the Virgin Mary mourning over the body of the dead Christ.

The Virgin with the Dead Christ, also known as the Röttgen Pietà, is a drastic and emotion example of a pietà. This sculpture was created during the Gothic period where war, plague, famine, and social strife where evident in peoples lives. The sculpture shows the emotion and turmoil of this period as well as the emotion of the event being depicted. Christ in this sculpture is shown distorted and stiffened with death while the Virgin Mary expresses her anguish while holding her son. This sculpture has weird proportions and is certainly hard to look at however, the dramatic emotion of the piece is unique.
